If You Mute Someone on Telegram, Will They Know?

If I mute someone on Telegram, will they know?

No. Telegram sends no notification when you mute a chat, and nothing on the other person's screen changes. Their messages still arrive, and they still get the usual read checks when you open the conversation. The only thing that can give you away is your own behaviour: if you stop replying, they may draw a conclusion, but Telegram will not have told them anything.

What Mute Actually Changes

Mute is a setting on your side of a conversation. It changes how your phone treats incoming messages and nothing else about the chat.
When a chat is muted, messages keep landing in it. The unread counter still climbs, though on most devices the badge turns grey and stops counting toward the number on the app icon. What disappears is the interruption: no banner, no sound, no buzz.
For the person on the other end, the chat behaves exactly as it did yesterday. Their message goes out, the single check appears, and it stays single until you open the conversation. Then it becomes two checks, the same as with any other chat. Muting has no effect on that, because read status comes from whether you opened the conversation and not from whether your phone made a noise.
That also answers a question people often type in the opposite direction, which is how to know if someone muted you on Telegram. You can't. There is no indicator to look for, and any site claiming to detect it is guessing from reply times.
Muting someone on Telegram sends them no alert and shows them no sign. What mute changes for you, what still gets through, and how it differs from a block.

How to Mute a Chat, and for How Long

Telegram moves its menus around between versions and platforms, so treat the wording here as approximate. Open the chat and tap the name at the top. You will find a notifications control on that screen, with choices along these lines:
  • mute for a set period, such as one hour or two days;
  • mute until you turn it back on;
  • turn off sound only, so notifications still appear silently;
  • customize, where you can give the chat its own tone.
The timed option is the one worth remembering. If a group is loud during a single event, muting it for a day means you don't have to remember to switch it back. Choosing "forever" for a friend you only wanted a break from tends to end with a message you notice three weeks late.

Mute in a Group Is Not Total Silence

Private chats and groups behave differently here, and this catches people out.
Telegram's FAQ describes the group case directly: mute the group and you will only get notifications when people mention you or reply to your messages. So a muted group can still reach you. An @mention or a reply to something you wrote will come through unless you have changed that behaviour in your notification settings.
Pinned messages are the other exception. The FAQ also says that when an admin pins a message with notification, all members get notified even if they muted ordinary messages from the group. If a muted group buzzes your phone, one of those two things is usually the reason.
In a group, muting is just as invisible as it is in a private chat. Admins have no list of who has muted the group, and other members can't see it either. Channel owners are in the same position: they can see their view counts and subscriber numbers, but not which subscribers switched notifications off. We looked at what that does to a channel in Telegram Channel Members Who Mute You.

Mute, Archive or Block: Pick the Right One

People tend to reach for one of these three when what they want is one of the others. The difference comes down to what you are trying to stop.
Mute is for a person you still want to hear from, just not right now. Archiving is for tidying a list, and it often works best combined with mute. Blocking is for someone who should not be able to reach you at all, and because it stops delivery, it can leave traces such as a message that never gets a second check. We have a separate guide on how people work out they have been blocked on Telegram.
If you want to read what someone sent without triggering the second check, mute doesn't help with that either. Options and their limits are covered in How To Read Telegram Messages Without Seen?

When You Run a Channel

For channel owners, the useful part of all this is what it implies about your numbers. Plenty of subscribers keep a channel muted and read it when they get around to it. A post can land without producing a single notification and still pick up views over the following days, which is why judging a post in its first hour tends to mislead.
It also means that a new channel can look emptier than it is, because the people who do read it are quiet. Visitors judge a channel partly by its subscriber count before they have read anything. That first impression is the part some owners choose to speed up with INSTABOOST Telegram members, delivered gradually, with a 60-day free refill on what we delivered. It changes how the channel looks to a new visitor and nothing beyond that: Telegram channels have no ranked feed to climb, and whether anyone stays depends on the posts. Frequently Asked Questions

If I mute someone on Telegram, can they still call me?

Yes. Muting a chat governs message notifications, and calls run through their own privacy setting. To limit calls, look under Privacy and Security in the settings, where you choose who can call you.

Will a muted person see that I read their message?

Yes, if you open the conversation and they haven't been blocked. Two checks appear as usual. Mute only affects your notifications, so it does nothing to hide that you read something.

Can I see a list of everyone I have muted?

There is no single dedicated list in the standard apps. Muted chats show a small crossed-out speaker beside the name in your chat list. Telegram's notification settings also show exceptions you have set, which covers individually changed chats.

Does muting stop messages from being saved?

No. Everything stays in the chat history and syncs across your devices as usual. When you unmute, nothing is lost, and the unread messages are still there waiting for you.
