Delete for Everyone on Telegram: What the Other Person Can Still Tell

If I delete a Telegram message for everyone, will they know?

Telegram leaves no "this message was deleted" marker and sends no alert, so the message simply vanishes from both sides. The other person can still know if they saw it first: on screen, in a notification, or through a screenshot or a forward they made. In a private chat you can delete any message for both sides. In a group, you can only remove your own, unless you're an admin.

What Happens When You Delete

Telegram's FAQ sets out the rule plainly: "You can always delete any messages you sent or received for both sides in any one-on-one conversation." The words that surprise people are "or received". It isn't only your own messages. In a private chat, either person can remove anything in the history, for both of them.
When you long-press a message and choose delete, the app usually offers a checkbox along the lines of "also delete for" and the person's name. With the box ticked, the message goes from both sides. With it unticked, it goes only from your own history, and the other person keeps their copy.
Afterward, there's no placeholder. WhatsApp shows a line saying a message was deleted. Telegram just closes the gap, so the conversation reads as though the message was never there. If the other person remembers it or wonders why a reply no longer makes sense, that's the only trace left in the chat itself.
Deleting a Telegram message for both sides leaves no notice in the chat. What it removes, what it can't reach, and how groups, edits and forwards differ.

Where the Message Can Survive

Deleting removes the message from Telegram. It can't reach things that have already left Telegram, and this list is the part to think about before you rely on deletion.
  • What they already read. Obvious, but it's the most common case. If the second check had already appeared, assume it was seen.
  • Notifications. A banner may have shown the text before you deleted it. Depending on the phone, Telegram may be able to clear that notification, but it can't undo someone having read it.
  • Screenshots and photos. In ordinary chats, Telegram doesn't notify anyone about screenshots. Secret chats behave differently, as we explain in What Is Telegram Secret Chat And How It Work?
  • Forwards. A forwarded copy is a new message in another chat. Deleting your original doesn't pull it back.
  • Downloaded files. A photo or document that someone saved to their device stays on their device.
And there's a timing point in your favour for a few seconds only. Telegram often shows a brief undo option right after you delete. Once that's gone, the message is gone. Telegram doesn't offer a trash folder for you to restore it from, and we explain the remaining options in How Can I Recover Deleted Messages From Telegram?

Groups Have a Different Rule

The FAQ adds a limit in brackets to the one-on-one rule: "in groups, it's still your own messages only." So an ordinary member of a group can delete what they wrote, and that disappears for everyone, but they can't touch what anyone else wrote.
Admins with the right permission can delete other people's messages. Admins also have a panel called Recent Actions. Telegram describes it as showing messages deleted in the last 48 hours, along with the original versions of edited messages from the same period. So in a group with attentive admins, deleting or rewriting something isn't invisible to them for those two days. Ordinary members have no access to the panel.
Channels sit in a similar place. A post can be deleted by whoever has the right to do so, and it disappears for subscribers without notice. Copies already forwarded elsewhere remain where they were forwarded to.

Clearing the Whole Chat

Deleting a single message and removing a conversation are separate actions. From the chat menu you can clear history or delete the chat, and in private chats the app again offers to do this for both sides.
If you do this for both sides, the other person sees an empty chat or no chat at all, without a message explaining why. An empty conversation with someone you were talking to yesterday is noticeable, of course, so this is less discreet than deleting one line.
If you only do it for yourself, their copy remains, and they keep everything you said.

Editing Is the Opposite of Discreet

People sometimes edit instead of deleting so that nothing disappears. You can edit your own messages for 48 hours after sending, and Telegram marks the result with a small "edited" label beside the time. The other person can see that it changed, although not what it said before. If they got a notification with the original wording, they may still have the first version, and in a group the admins can see the original in Recent Actions.
Delete leaves no marker but creates a gap. Edit leaves a marker but keeps the flow. For a typo, edit. For something that should never have been sent, delete quickly and accept that it may already have been seen.

Self-Destruct Timers Prevent the Problem

If you know in advance that a message shouldn't stay around, deletion after the fact is the worse tool. Telegram offers auto-delete timers for chats, and secret chats have their own self-destruct timer. The FAQ explains that in secret chats the countdown starts when the message is displayed on the recipient's screen and that the message then disappears from both devices. It also notes that the timer only applies to messages sent after it was set, so it won't clean up the past.
No timer prevents a photo of the screen from another phone, and we'd treat anything sent to another person as potentially kept.

If You Run a Channel

Deleting posts in a channel has a side effect on your counters. A deleted post takes its views with it, and subscribers who had come for that post get no explanation. Some owners delete weak posts to make the channel look tidier, then find it looks inactive instead.
That quiet look is often what puts off the next visitor, who sees low numbers and leaves before reading anything. A better fix than deleting is posting regularly, and for a brand-new channel some owners also add starting numbers with INSTABOOST Telegram members, delivered gradually, with a 60-day free refill on what we delivered. That only changes the first impression. Keeping anyone depends on what you post. The other tools are on our Telegram page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete a Telegram message I sent long ago?

In a private chat, yes. The FAQ says you can always delete any message for both sides in a one-on-one conversation. It doesn't set a time limit there, so an old message can go the same way as a new one.

Can the other person delete my messages from my phone?

Yes, in a private chat. Either person can remove any message for both sides, which is why a message of yours can disappear from your own history without you doing anything.

Does Telegram tell me if someone deleted a message?

No. There's no notification and no placeholder. You might notice a gap in the conversation or a reply that no longer has context, but Telegram won't point it out.

Can I get back a message the other person deleted for both of us?

Not from Telegram itself once it's gone from the servers and your devices. Copies only exist if someone saved or forwarded them, or if your phone's notifications kept a record.
