Archiving a Telegram Chat: What It Hides and What the Other Person Sees

If I archive a chat on Telegram, will the other person know?

No. Archiving only moves the chat into a separate folder on your account, and Telegram doesn't tell the other person. They can keep writing, and their messages still reach you. If you open the chat, they'll still see two checks. Archive isn't a block or a way to read secretly. Unless you mute the chat or change one setting, an archived chat comes back to your main list when a new message arrives.

What Archive Is For

Archive is a filing cabinet for your chat list. A chat you archive leaves the main list and goes into a folder called Archived Chats. Nothing about the conversation itself changes: the history, the media and the shared files all remain, and the other person's view is identical to what it was before.
That's its whole job, and most confusion comes from expecting more of it. It doesn't hide you from anyone. It doesn't stop messages. It doesn't remove anything. If your aim is that a person can't reach you, you want a block. If your aim is to stop your phone buzzing, you want mute. Archive only answers the question "why is my list so long?"
Archiving a Telegram chat sends no alert and only tidies your own list. Why archived chats jump back, how to keep them hidden, and what archive doesn't do.

How to Archive, on Each Device

Telegram rearranges its menus from time to time, so these are the usual routes rather than exact labels.
  • On Android and iPhone, swipe the chat to the left in your list and tap Archive. You can also long-press a chat, and on iPhone the swipe is the quickest route.
  • To archive several at once on a phone, press and hold one chat to enter selection mode, tap the others, then pick Archive from the menu.
  • On desktop, right-click the chat and choose to archive it.
An archive folder appears at the top of your chat list on phones. Pull down on the list if it's hidden, and you can usually pin it, collapse it or tuck it away from its own menu.

Why Archived Chats Keep Coming Back

This is the top complaint about the feature: you archive a noisy chat, and an hour later it's back in the main list.
That's the default behaviour. An archived chat that isn't muted returns to your main list when a new message arrives. Muted chats stay in the archive and collect unread messages quietly, until something generates a notification for you, such as a mention or a reply. Telegram's own API documentation lists a setting for exactly this behaviour: whether unmuted chats will be kept in the Archive list when they get a new message.
So you have two ways to keep a chat archived:
  1. Mute it first, then archive it. This is the older approach. For most people's noisy groups, it's what they wanted anyway.
  2. Change the setting. In recent versions, open the Archived Chats folder and look for Archive Settings in its menu. The option is labelled along the lines of Always Keep Archived. Turn it on if you want chats to stay filed even without muting.
If a chat is staying archived but you're missing messages from it, this is the same setting working against you. Archived chats stay out of sight, so it's worth a look at the folder now and then.

What the Other Person Can Still Notice

Telegram gives them no signal about archiving. The behaviours around it can still be read, though.
If you archive a chat and then stop opening it, their messages stay on one check, exactly as they would if you were simply busy. That's identical to several other situations, including the one we cover in How To Know If Someone Blocked You On Telegram? If you open the chat in the archive and read, two checks appear. Your online status and last seen work as usual too, governed by your privacy settings and not by anything to do with the archive.
So someone trying to work out whether you archived them has nothing to go on. Sites and bots claiming to detect it have no such data available to them.

Archive Isn't Private From People Holding Your Phone

Some people use the archive to keep a chat out of sight of someone who might look at their phone. It's a thin wall. The folder is visible to anyone who opens the app and scrolls, and a search in Telegram finds archived chats like any other. A new message from an unmuted chat also pushes it back into the main list.
Telegram does offer a passcode lock for the whole app, and that's the tool for this situation. Secret chats are stored only on the devices taking part in them, which adds a different kind of protection. We describe them in What Is Telegram Secret Chat And How It Work?

Archive, Folders or Delete

If your real goal is order, Telegram's chat folders often beat the archive. A folder groups chats under tabs such as Work or Family while leaving them in plain reach, and each folder can have its own rules about what it includes.
Archive suits chats you aren't using but may want later: finished projects, old group trips, channels you read only occasionally. Deleting suits things you don't want at all. Leaving a group means you stop receiving it entirely. Note that a group you archive still counts you as a member, so you still appear in its member list if that list is visible.
The same is true of channels. Subscribers who archive a channel stay subscribed and may keep reading from the folder. Owners can't see any of this, only the view and subscriber totals, which we discuss in Telegram Views vs Reads.

A Note for Channel Owners

Since so many subscribers file channels away, a post can appear days after it was published in someone's reading, and it's common to see views keep rising well after the first day. Judge a post over about a week instead of the first hours.
Subscriber count is also what a newcomer sees before reading anything. If your channel is new and that number is low, some owners add a starting base with INSTABOOST Telegram members, delivered gradually, with a 60-day free refill on what we delivered. It affects only the first impression, and it doesn't create readers: the channel's posts have to do that. The other tools are on our Telegram page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still get messages from an archived chat?

Yes. Every message still arrives and the chat history stays complete. Whether you get a notification depends on mute: an unmuted archived chat notifies you and normally returns to your main list.

Does archiving a Telegram chat delete anything?

No. Messages, photos and files stay as they were. To bring a chat back, open the archive, swipe or long-press it, and choose unarchive.

Can I archive a channel or a group?

Yes, in the same way. You remain a subscriber or member, and the other members aren't told. Admins can't see that you filed it away.

Why can't I find my Archived Chats folder?

It may be hidden at the top of your list. Pull down on the chat list on a phone to reveal it, and check its menu to pin it back. If you've never archived anything, the folder won't appear.
