Does Telegram Notify Screenshots?

In Secret Chats, and for self-destructing photos and videos sent in an ordinary private chat. Take a screenshot inside a Secret Chat and Telegram posts a service message into the conversation telling the other person you did. Ordinary messages in cloud chats, groups and channels send nothing. On Android, Telegram goes further inside a Secret Chat and blocks the capture outright, so the image saves black.

Ordinary Chats, Groups and Channels: Nothing Is Sent

Screenshot a normal Telegram conversation and nothing happens. No alert, no service message, no counter, no log the other person can open later. One exception: media sent with a self-destruct timer, covered below. The same holds in groups of any size, in channels, in the comment thread under a channel post, and in a chat with a bot. Telegram documents screenshot alerts for Secret Chats and for self-destructing media, and for nothing else. Some chats do block the capture without telling anyone, which is covered further down.
The default conversation on Telegram is a cloud chat, meaning the message lives on Telegram's servers and syncs to your phone, tablet and desktop at once. Capture alerts sit badly with that design: the same chat may be open on three devices, and Telegram itself says there is no bulletproof way to detect screenshots on certain systems.
So if you grabbed a screenshot of a conversation last night and have spent the morning uneasy about it, the answer is no. There is nothing inside the app that tells them. What the other person can still see is ordinary read state, the second checkmark that appears once the message has been opened on a device you are signed into. What people assume a platform discloses and what it actually shows are rarely the same thing on any network, which is the territory of how much a hidden Facebook account really gives away.
Does Telegram notify screenshots? In Secret Chats, and for self-destructing media. Regular chats, groups and channels send nothing. Here is the whole map.

Secret Chats: The One Place Telegram Tells On You

Secret Chats are close to a separate product living inside the same app. They are end-to-end encrypted, bound to the two devices that opened them, missing from your other logged-in sessions, and never kept on Telegram's servers. They also carry the capture rule Telegram states in plain language: screenshot a Secret Chat and the other participant is informed. The FAQ hedges that promise: every effort will be made, and on some systems the alert can be bypassed.
The notice is not a push alert off in the notification shade. It drops into the conversation itself, as a line of grey centred service text naming who did it, the same styling used when a self-destruct timer changes. Both people see it: "Alice took a screenshot!" on one side, "You took a screenshot!" on the other.
A Secret Chat has to be started on purpose, from the contact's profile or the new-message menu on mobile, and the thread is then labelled as secret with a small lock by the name. If you have no memory of doing that, you are in a cloud chat and none of this applies. Telegram Desktop, the universal client for Windows, macOS and Linux, does not offer Secret Chats, though the separate native app for macOS does, so a thread you can open in Telegram Desktop is a cloud chat. Every messenger draws this line somewhere different, and where Messenger keeps its secret conversations is a useful comparison for anyone moving between the two apps.

Why Your Screenshot Came Out Black

Android and iOS give apps opposite powers here, and Telegram works inside what each one permits.
On Android an app can flag its window as secure, and the system then refuses to capture it. Telegram sets that flag for Secret Chats. What you get is either a system message saying screenshots are blocked by app or security policy, or a saved image that is completely black. Nobody was notified in that case, because no screenshot ever existed.
On iOS the screenshot buttons belong to the system. What Telegram's app uses there is a system notification Apple provides for exactly that purpose, which tells it a screenshot happened, immediately afterwards. Hence the split in Secret Chats: Android tends to stop you, iOS tends to report you. On Android the black rectangle turns up in a few other places as well: anywhere in the app once a passcode is set, unless Show App Content in Task Switcher is on; in chats where content protection has been switched on by an owner; and in one-to-one chats where a Premium user picked Disable Sharing, an option added in March 2026 that Telegram says prevents screenshots.
Ways around either mechanism are not covered here. Where there is a switch, it belongs to the other person or to the channel owner.

Self-Destructing Media and Auto-Delete Timers

Three timers get mistaken for one another, and only one of them involves a screenshot alert at all:
  • Secret Chat timers. Messages and media delete after viewing, and the screenshot notice described above applies for as long as it is on screen.
  • Self-destructing photos and videos in an ordinary private chat. These vanish when a timer runs out, and the countdown starts when the recipient opens them. They are the one alert outside a Secret Chat: Telegram's announcement of the feature says the sender is notified at once if the recipient screenshots the media. Best effort, like the Secret Chat notice.
  • The chat-wide auto-delete timer set to a day, a week, a month or a custom period. It clears old messages on a schedule for both sides. Housekeeping, nothing more.
A deletion timer removes the copy held inside Telegram. It has no opinion whatsoever about a copy that already left the app.

Stories: A Viewer List, Not a Capture Alert

Telegram Stories, which launched in August 2023, keep a list of who opened them, visible to the author until 24 hours after the story expires, and indefinitely on Premium accounts. That list records views. Telegram documents no screenshot mark on it, and no "took a screenshot of your story" notice to anyone.
Capture is left to a switch the author controls. The privacy menu holding Everyone, My Contacts, Close Friends and Selected Contacts also holds an Allow Screenshots option. Turn it off and Telegram says screenshots are prevented, and viewers lose the in-app options for saving or sharing the story. That block is friction and nothing sturdier: enforcement depends on the client and the operating system, and no app anywhere can do anything about a second phone pointed at the screen. Viewer lists in general promise more precision than they deliver, a point worth reading across platforms in what a story view counter actually measures.

Restrict Saving Content, and What It Buys

Group and channel owners have a related switch of their own, under Group or Channel Info, then Group or Channel Type, listed as Restrict Saving Content. Turn it on and forwarding is disabled, media can no longer be saved to the device, and Telegram says it also prevents screenshots. On Android the secure-window flag applies to that chat, so they come out black. It is the closest thing Telegram offers to screenshot protection for a whole audience instead of a single conversation.
It is still not a lock. Enforcement varies by platform, desktop clients have been reported to capture such chats anyway, and the camera problem defeats it everywhere. The switch also costs reach: forwards are how a channel reaches people who never joined it, and turning saving off narrows the readership to those already inside. Reach and control sit on one axis, and that axis runs through the case for building a brand on live video too, where the format wins audience by being open and unedited.
If you run a channel and also want its numbers to move, our Telegram growth services cover members, views and reactions. They run on the channel's public link and change none of these settings.

What a Screenshot Alert Is Worth

Even where the alert fires, it is an etiquette signal rather than a security control. It names who captured something and when. It does not record what was on screen, and it cannot pull the copy back off the device it landed on. A phone held up to photograph the display leaves no trace in any of this.
Which leaves one rule that no setting reaches. Anything you send becomes a copy you no longer administer. Send accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Telegram show a black screen when I take a screenshot?

Because the app marked that window as secure and Android refused to capture it. Telegram does this in Secret Chats, across the app once a passcode is set unless Show App Content in Task Switcher is on, in groups or channels where the owner has enabled Restrict Saving Content, and in one-to-one chats with Disable Sharing switched on. You end up with a blank or black image, or a system message saying screenshots are not allowed. Nothing is reported to anyone in that situation, because no screenshot was actually taken.

Does Telegram notify screen recording?

Telegram does not publish a detailed list of what it counts as a capture event, so treat detection as best effort and check the behaviour on the device you actually use. Inside Secret Chats on iOS, the published code of Telegram's app watches the system's screen-capture state, so screen recording can trigger the same in-chat service message as a screenshot. For ordinary cloud chats, groups and channels, Telegram documents no recording alert at all.

Does Telegram tell you if someone saves a picture?

Not in an ordinary chat. Saving a photo or video from a cloud chat, group or channel is silent, and downloads are never logged for the sender to see. There are exceptions, and none of them is a download alert. A channel owner can switch on Restrict Saving Content, which disables saving and forwarding for everyone in the chat, and a Premium user can do much the same in a one-to-one chat with Disable Sharing. Media in a Secret Chat falls under the screenshot notice if someone captures the screen instead of saving, and so does self-destructing media in a private chat.
